The YouTube app has a GIF option in the comment box; on a computer the GIF Comments extension adds a GIF button next to the emoji button.

iPhone, iPad and Android

How to comment GIFs on YouTube mobile

The same four steps work on iPhone, iPad and Android. The only difference is where you update the app.

  1. Update the YouTube app

Open the App Store on iPhone or iPad, or Google Play on Android, and install the latest YouTube update. GIF comments only come to recent versions.

  2. Open the comments

Under a video, tap the comments. On a Short, tap the comment button on the right.

  3. Tap the comment box and look for GIF

Once your account has the rollout, a GIF option sits in the comment box. Tap it to open the GIF library.

  4. Search, pick, post

Type a word like lol or clap, tap the GIF you want and post it. Text you typed first goes out with it.

How to comment GIFs on YouTube on PC

youtube.com shows GIF comments but has no button to post one, even on accounts that already have GIFs in the app. A browser extension adds it.

  1. Install GIF Comments

The free extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave and Firefox adds the missing GIF button. No account, no setup.

  2. Open the comments

Click Add a comment under any video or Short, or Reply under someone's comment.

  3. Click GIF

The button sits right next to the emoji button. Search Tenor or tap a mood: LOL, Wow, Clap, Facepalm.

  4. Pick one and press Post GIF

Your text and the GIF go out as one comment, and everyone sees it, on phones and computers.

Shorts and replies

How to comment GIFs on YouTube Shorts and replies

  • On Shorts

Open a Short's comments and use the same GIF option. On a computer, the GIF button appears in the Shorts comment panel too.

  • As a reply

Tap or click Reply under a comment and add a GIF the same way. Replies take GIFs just like top-level comments.

  • With text

Write your text first, then add the GIF. Both go out together as one comment.

  • Not in these places

GIFs can't be added while editing a comment you already posted, or in a community post.

How to get GIFs on YouTube early

There's no switch to join the rollout: YouTube turns GIF comments on from its side, account by account. What you can do:

  • Keep the app updated

A newer app version is the one thing on your side that the feature needs. Turn on automatic updates.

  • Check another account

The rollout goes by account, so a second Google account on the same phone can have it before your main one.

  • Use a computer today

On desktop the GIF Comments extension posts GIF comments on any account, rollout or not.

  • Skip modded apps

Searches for a GIF comments APK lead to modified YouTube apps. They are not needed and can put your Google account at risk.

Questions

How to comment GIFs on YouTube: FAQ

Does the GIF option work on iPad?

Yes. iPad uses the same YouTube app as iPhone, so the GIF option arrives the same way: with the rollout and a recent app version.

Why is there no GIF button in my YouTube app?

Your account isn't in the rollout yet, or the app is out of date. Update it and check again in a few days. See why you can't post GIFs for the other causes.

Can I comment GIFs on YouTube on PC without an extension?

Not as of October 14, 2026: youtube.com shows GIF comments but has no button to post them. The YouTube GIF extension adds that button.

Do people on phones see GIFs I post from PC?

Yes. A GIF posted with GIF Comments is a normal YouTube GIF comment, so it shows for everyone on the app and on the website.

Can I post GIFs in a YouTube community post?

Not as a GIF comment. GIF comments work under videos and Shorts, in new comments and replies.
